Dish Shapur II Hunting Lions
4th century
Silver, gilding
Diam 29.9 cm
This marvellous dish, in the creation
of which various techniques were
employed – casting, chasing, is an
outstanding example of early
Sassanian silverware. This is not just
a vessel, but a work of official art. An
accurate depiction of all details,
including costume and accessories,
which is common in Sassanian dishes
and bowls, has enabled scholars to
identify many of the persons depicted
on them, for they wear crowns similar
to those seen on coins of the
Sassanid rulers. Thus the hunter in
this dish has been identified as King
Shapur II.
