| Designed by D.Trezzini and the engineer de Marine the Commandant’s House was a typical residential building of St. Petersburg of the mid 18th century. Inside there were the Commandant’s living quarters and some auxiliary premises. The Commandants - usually the outstanding military leaders and the most trust-worthy servants of the Crown - were appointed by the Emperor. The first Commandant of the Fortress was K.Rönne (1703-1704) followed in the years to come by R.Bruce (1704-1720), N.Zinovyev (1764-1773), A.Sukin (1814-1837), I.Skobelev (1830-1849), I.Nabokov (1849-1852), etc. All in all during the tsarist times there were 34 Commandants in the Fortress. This position was honorable and was often granted for life. 19 Commandants who died on their post were buried at the Commandant’s Cemetery at the Eastern wall of the St. Peter and St. Paul’s Cathedral. | ||||
