Small Cabinet Decorated with a Mosaic of a Tropical Forest
Peterhof Lapidary Factory
1888-1892
Mahogany, ormolu, mosaics (cacholong, jasper, flat pebbles from Koktebel in Crimea, granite, lapis lazuli )
148 x 72.5 x 40 cm
This is a vivid example of the work of Russian mosaicists-a small cabinet made from mahogany, with bronze applications and insets of various kinds of stones using the Florentine mosaic technique. The panel was created by the craftsmen A. V. Shutov and A. Ya. Sokolov after drawings by M. P. Klodt and N. V. Nabokov. The artists very carefully selected the stones to match the colours, shades and tiny details of the sketch. With a wide range of minerals at their disposal, the artists were able to represent a luxuriant tropical forest and its inhabitants.
