The Young orchestra was founded in 1999 by Valery Gergiev with the aim of perfecting the performance technique of a new generation of artists. The Young orchestra is a key component of the Mariinsky theatre and its members are chosen on the basis of auditors or musical competitions.
At present there are 61 places in the orchestra, with is only a quarter of the size of the symphony orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, witch numbers over 200 musicians.
The young orchestra is made up mostly student from the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov conservatory, with some places being filed by young performers of the musical college of St. Petersburg. The orchestra is headed by G.Noseda. The members study symphonic, operatic and ballet works and are gradually becoming involved in current performances. A.Paulovichoos works constantly with them.
In this season the orchestra has performed several times on the stages of the Mariinsky theatre and the Large Philharmonic hall. Their first independent performance was a matinee performance of "Le nosse di Figaro" on the 20th of June 1999. On the 1st of December the orchestra performed a symphonic concert, conducted by G. Noseda. On the 6th of January 2000 the orchestra performed a concert dedicated to the memory of professor I. Musin , national artist of Russia. The orchestra was conducted by the following students of I. Musin: M.Agrest, M.Balchunas, S.Bekirova, A. Danilov, T. Sokhiev, P. Smelkov. On the 8th of June 2000 the orchestra took part in a joint performance with the symphony orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, as part of the " Stars of the White Night" festival.
