French Art of the 20th Century. Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis. Exhibition in the Rooms of the General Staff Building
On September 7 1999, the State Hermitage Museum opened its first exhibition in the General Staff Building, a new building of the Museum complex. This exhibition is the first of the series The Gallery of Ivan Morozov and Sergei Shchukin which houses the eastern wing of the General Staff Building. The series is called so in honour of great Russian collectors Ivan Morozov and Sergei Shchukin - items from their collections are now part of the Hermitage Museum collection. Amongst the works on show are paintings by two artists of the Nabi group -- By the Mediterranean Sea by Pierre Bonnard and Amour and Psyche by Maurice Denis. On account of their large size, these paintings were on display only on temporary exhibitions.
