Unknown Terrain. The Landscapes of Andrew Wyeth (USA)

Unknown Terrain consists of 54 landscapes kindly lent for this exhibition by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. These works were created over the long career of Andrew Wyeth, now 80 and considered America's most popular living painter. Wyeth is acclaimed by art lovers around the world.

Andrew Wyeth was born in 1917 in the small town of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He was initially taught by his father, a painter and illustrator, and then studied oil painting before finally giving preference to watercolour. Andrew Wyeth has almost never left his native lands and is mostly inspired by the world around him in Pennsylvania. His work combines elements typical of the American realist tradition-the idealization of American farming, a predilection for one's native land, accurate depiction sometimes almost photographic in quality-with a poetic perception of reality, which has led a number of critics to associate him with the magical realism tendency.
