The history of Mariinsky theatre goes back to 1783, when a Big (Stone) Theatre was opened in St. Petersburg, where drama opera and ballet performances were showed. Nowadays St. Petersburg Conservatory is in that building.
According to the Catherine the Second order, instead of this building a new Big (Stone) theatre was erected, that outstood the biggest theatres of Europe by its gorgeousness and luxury. In 1849 in the building, that was built according to the project of Alberto Cavos, a circus was opened with a big riding performance. It was planned to be used for theatre needs also.
In the night of January 26th 1859 the circus got on fire. On its place according to the plan of the same architect a new theatre was built for musical and drama performances. It was named after the emperor Alexander the Second wife Maria Alexandrovna - Mariinsky. Russian opera and ballet company moved here.
